John Hughes R.I.P.

He made some pretty cool films , and some not so…I’ll just stick to remembering the ones I liked, thanks.

John Hughes, Jr. (February 18, 1950 – August 6, 2009) was an American film director, producer and writer. He made some of the most successful comedy films of the 1980s and 1990s.

He made a bunch of stuff then “retired”, he disappeared off the face of the film earth

Supposedly he was somewhat of an asshole to work with and there came the point where he more or less got shut out by Hollywood. Supposedly the shoot on ‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles’ was a nightmare as Hughes made sure everyone knew they were there because of his ‘genius’. While the hits were coming I don’t think anyone really cared, but once he delved into mawkish sentimentality (Though his films always had an element of that) and his films underperformed, he more or less went off into a sulk and then decided to never direct again.

What’s pretty funny though is that he was previously an ad man, so he used his skills to pitch countless treatments to Paramount et al, and he got paid for all of them. They’re still being used to this day (Maid in Manhattan is one, as is Drillbit Taylor). Just look for the name Edmund Dantes on the credits as that was Hughes’ pseudonym.
